All cars competeting with 9 to 1  & sealed engines will weight a minimum weight of 2800# and 58% left side. assigned rev limit chip must be used.
 (7300 rpm rev limit chip)
*BIR reserves the right to adjust RPM rev limit chips to even the competition.

 

2008 Birmingham Super Series

   

The rules and/or regulations set fourth herein provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements of such events.  These rules shall govern the condition of all such events.  All participants are deemed to have complied with these rules.  No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from publications of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations.  BIR rules are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant.

1.                 BIR Officials shall be empowered to permit minor deviations from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions that in his/her opinion do not alter the minimum acceptable requirements.  No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from such altercation of specifications. 

*BIR reserves the rights to update, modify, and/or delete rules at any time deemed necessary to insure safety, fair competition or any other reason that may be appropriate.

*Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the officials.  Any decision of and by BIR Officials is final. 

*Unsportsmanlike conduct can carry a minimum $100.00 fine and/or suspension.  Any and all fines will be added to the Point Fund at the end of the racing season.

Weight

All specified weight requirements would be with gas, oil, water and driver prior to racing.

  1. Maximum allowable left side weight will be 58 percent of the total car weight.
  2. Minimum weight 2750# for  ABC bodies. Bodies must fit Referee.
  3. Perimeter frame chassis 50 lb. weight break.
  4. Added weight must be in block form of no less than five-pound blocks (no pellets).  Added weight must be securely bolted in place.  Dislodged weight cannot be returned to car for weighing after race.  All added weight must be painted white with car number in red or black.  Any lost weight will result in a $10 per pound fine to the Driver.

BSS  Late Model Challenge Series Engine Rules 

General Motors crate engine part number 88958604 Ford crate engines M6007D347 Dodge crate engines P5007958.  All sealing bolts must remain as installed from factory.  Removal of sealing bolts will result in disqualification.  NOTE:  See Carburetor and Ignition sections.

OR

1.                 Displacement, maximum 362 CID, V8 only.

2.                 9 to 1 aluminum head engines minimum

3.                  Hamner Sealed Engine with 7300 rpm chip & McGunegil “Sealed Engine” with 7200 rpm chip.  

Block, Cam Shaft and Lifters

1.                 General Motors, Ford or Chrysler cast iron small block only.  Four-bolt mains permitted with steel caps.  Plugs may be used in block for strength only; pldebured.

2.                 Stock-appearing after-market steel or steel billet rods and “H” beam rods permitted at any length, no titanium rods permitted.  Polishing or machine work not permitted on rods, except for balancing.

3.                 Flattop or dish  pistons only.

Cylinder Heads

1.                 Only cast iron 23° OEM type heads permitted. 9 to 1 engine may utilize Aluminum heads no less than 18*

2.                 O-rings permitted in Ford head or block.

Rocker Arms

1.                 Adjustable after-market, roller rocker arms and shaft rocker arms permitted.  Polly locks permitted.

2.                 7/16" screw-in studs and guide plates permitted.  Studs may be pinned.  Stud girdles permitted.

3.                 Chevy Crate Motor may run 1.6 ratio factory type rocker arms.ugs may not be higher than block surface.

2.                 Camshaft, optional

3.                 Wet, dry or accusump oiling systems and racing oil pans permitted.

Crank, Rods, and Pistons

1.                 After market steel crank permitted with stock stroke+/-.020”.  Chevrolet 350 may use a 3.480" stroke steel crank.  Ford 302 may use a stroked steel crank, stroke is not specified.  Cranks may be balanced and

 

Intake Manifold

1.                 High performance cast-iron and aluminum intake manifolds permitted.  BIR Officials must approve intake manifolds.

 

Exhaust

1.                 Any type single flange steel tubular header permitted.  Exhaust system must exit behind driver.

Carburetor

1.                 Crate engine -- Holly 650 HP 4150-80541 four-barrel.  No alterations.

2.                 Steel head or 9 to 1 --Holly 2300 two-barrel number 4412.

3.                 Body of carburetor – no polishing, grinding, or drilling of holes permitted.  No paint or any other type of coating other than from carburetor manufacturer allowed inside or outside of carburetor.

4.                 Choke assembly may be removed, but choke horn must remain.                                (BOX STOCK ONLY) but all screws must be permanently sealed.

5.                 Booster size or shape must not be altered.  Height must remain standard.

6.                 Ventura area must not be altered in any manner.  Casting ring must not be removed.

7.                 Base plate must not be altered in shape or size.

8.                 Stock butterflies must not be thinned or tapered.

9.                 Throttle shafts must remain standard and cannot be thinned or cut in any manner.

10.             No silicone or epoxy allowed on throttle shafts.

11.             Any attempt to pull outside air other than down through venturis is not permitted.

12.             A minimum of two return springs is required.  Throttle stops recommended.

Carburetor Spacer

1.                 Only one non-adjustable one-piece solid aluminum carburetor spacer permitted, maximum ¾" in height, with 1 paper gasket per side not to exceed .065" in thickness.  Spacer must have two holes with openings cut perpendicular, matching carburetor base, and no larger than base of carburetor.  No taper or beveling permitted.

2.                 Crate Motor spacer Maximum height 1" Aluminum, Open or 4-hole type allowed. No taper or beveled holes. (VDL spacer # 251-443-599 allowed on chevy crate engines).

3.                 Ford McGunegill will not be allowed to run a carburetor spacer.

 BSS Super Late Model Engine Rules

1.                 9:1 Compression Engine 362 Max Cubic InchesCannot exceed 9.5:1 compression. Method of determining compression will be at the discretion of BSS Officials.

2.                 Minimum valve angle: GM-18 degrees; Ford 9 degrees with 4 degrees valve center; and Mopar 12 degrees. (+/- 2 degrees)

3.                 Steel or aluminum cylinder heads.

4.                 Steel standard production crankshaft; balancing, lightening, stroking allowed.

5.             Any camshaft, any steel lifter, any rockers arms. Gear drives allowed.

6.       Steel or aluminum intake. No fabricated intakes.

 
390 CFM 4bbl Part #6895 or #80507. Carburetors must pass inspection at any time regardless of temperature. Booster bar may be removed from center of booster (max inside dia. of booster .473) and the booster may be tapered from the center seam down (booster must retain .700 length minimum) but all 4 boosters must be the same style. No other modifications are allowed on carburetors.

8.        2” MAXIMUM SPACER ALLOWED BUT CANNOT EXTEND INTO MANIFOLD.

Steel Head Engine 362 Max Cubic Inches

1.     Any flat-topped piston may have valve reliefs. Piston cannot extend out of block.

2.     Cast or steel production crankshaft. Balancing allowed. Stroke must be within .020 of stock stroke for engine used.

3.     Any flat tappet hydraulic or roller camshaft allowed.

4.     Cast Iron Bowtie, Sportsman II or Iron Eagle 200 heads only.

5.     Maximum valve size: GM intake 2.055/exhaust 1.625; Ford intake 2.085/exhaust 1.656; Mopar intake 2.020/exhaust 1.625

6.     Multi-angle valve job allowed, no blending between cutter and casting. No work in runners, bowls or chambers. 75 degree maximum cut. GM heads may be port matched to Mr. Gasket #102 intake gasket. Maximum depth of port matching is 1" from machined surface; grinding only, no polishing. Titanium valves and retainers allowed. Maximum intake runner volume – 208 cc.

7.     Unaltered 750 CFM 4bbl Part #4779 or #80528 Carburetors must pass inspection at any time regardless of temperature.

8.     2” MAXIMUM SPACER ALLOWED BUT CANNOT EXTEND INTO MANIFOLD.

  Sealed Engines & Crate Engines

1.                 McGunegil “Sealed Engine” with 7200 rpm chip and 750 Carburetor.

2.                 Hamner Sealed Engine with 7600 rpm chip and 750 Carburetor.

3.                 General Motors crate engine part number 88958604 Ford crate engines M6007D347 Dodge crate engines P5007958.  All sealing bolts must remain as installed from factory. Removal of sealing bolts will result in disqualification. (Crate engine cars will have a special weight combinationin in the SLM Series) 

ALL SEALED ENGINES AND CONPONENTS MUST REMAIN AS SUPPIED BY BUILDER! 

Air Intake

1.                 Air cleaner cannot be removed at any time during competition or practice.

2.                 Round dry type paper or K & N type element allowed 12-20" in diameter, maximum 5" in height must be used in air cleaner at all times.  Element may not be sprayed or soaked with any type of chemicals or liquids. 

3.                 Cowl induction, An opening 2 ½" b 20" may be cut in the hood behind the carburetor with the back edge either meeting or a maximum of 1” from the windshield.  A fresh air deflector will be permitted and must be placed at the center of the leading edge of the windshield directly under the hood opening.  The fresh air deflector must be made of aluminum and measure a maximum of 2" down and 2" foreword by 20" in width with square bends and no radius or air flow devices, end caps permitted no larger than 2" by 2".

4.                 Only Complete ABC Bodies may run ABC cowl.

5.                 No sheet metal heat shields or any other type of hot air deflection device or airflow deflection device allowed past the backside of the radiator or in engine compartment.

Engine Placement

1.                 Measured from the center of #1 spark plug hole to the center of the top ball joint within ¼" tolerance.  Chevrolet – 2", Ford 302 and 351 – 4", Dodge – 4".

2.                 Engine must be in center of frame with 1" tolerance.

3.                 Center of crankshaft to ground clearance 10” with ¼?€œ tolerance.

Transmission

1.                 Must have OEM factory-type transmission with at least two forward and one reverse working gears.  Jerico type transmission permitted.

2.                 No Rankin direct drive type, quick-change or automatic transmissions permitted. 

Clutch

1.                 Multiple disc clutches with steel floaters and pressure plates permitted.

2.                 Clutch housing assembly or cover may be made of steel or aluminum.

Spindles

1.                 Aftermarket, homemade and ¾"-ton spindles permitted.  Must be steel only.

Brakes

1.                 Front and rear disc brakes mandatory.  Any caliper permitted. Cooling ducts permitted.

Ignition (Challenge Series only)

1.                 Breaker less, or dual point systems permitted.  Ignition booster, racing coils or high performance ignition wires permitted.  No magnetos or crank trigger ignition systems.

2.                 Alternators permitted.

3.                 One battery permitted.  Maximum 16 volt and mounted securely outside of drivers compartment.

4.                 All wiring must be sealed.  No unplugged wiring.

5.                 All ignition components (Coil & MSD type systems) must be mounted on dash area in plain view.

6.                 No traction control devices allowed.

7.                 All cars must run a MSD ignition system with a REV Limiter. The ignition box must be mounted out of reach from the driver on the right side of the car.

8.                 Crate Motors Mandatory 6300 RPM Rev chip limiter REV Limiter must be in working order (BIR will assign 6300 chips at qualifying inspection).

9.                 Built Motors Mandatory 7300 RPM Rev limiter must be in working order (BIR will assign 7300 chips at qualifying inspection)

Wheels

1.                 Racing steel wheels only, maximum rim width 10".

2.                 Air bleeders permitted.

 

Tires

1.                 Designated Hoosier.  NO soaking or altering of tire in any manner allowed.  Drivers soaking of altering tires will forfeit all purse and points for the event and all track points for the year.  Driver must also pay a $1,000 fine prior to being allowed to compete at BIR.  Any illegal tire, in the judgment of BIR Officials, will be confiscated. 
Desiginated Tires: (SLM & Crate Cars Right & Left #2045)
                          (Challenge Series Right & Left #2045)
After track is resurfaced Hoosier Racing Tire will perform a tire test with a combination of tires to determine the best tires for competition.  

 2.                 Maximum tread width allowed is 65 ½"+/-½".  Tread width is measured from the left center of tire to the right center of tire.  Spacers permitted.

Shocks

1.                 Racing shocks permitted.  One shock per wheel.  Adjustable shocks allowed.

Rear Ends

1.                 Quick change and open tube rear ends permitted.

2.                 Independent rear suspension or cambered rear ends permitted, one-degree camber tolerance permitted.

3.                 Damper shocks permitted.

Fuel & Fuel System/Cell

TRACK FUEL REQUIRED. MINIMUM PURCHASE OF 10 GALLONS REQUIRED AT EACH EVENT. This will be the only fuel permitted to be used and must be unaltered. Fuel samples may be taken at any time and tested. Alcohol, nitro-methane, nitrous oxide, other oxygenating agents, or other additives are not permitted. No mixing of race fuel with regular pump gas. Use of such substances or additives will result in immediate D.Q.

1.                 Manual, block mounted, stock type fuel pumps only.  No electric fuel pumps.

2.                 No icing, Freon type chemicals or refrigerants may be used in or near the fuel system or engine compartment.  No cooling of fuel cell or fuel system.

3.                 Fuel cell mandatory, maximum capacity 22 gallons, vented with maximum 1" vent to outside left rear of body.

4.                 Fuel cell must have a minimum of two, made of 1" square tubing, protection braces wrapping around fuel cell from front, underneath and to back of cell and a rear protection bar of 1.75" tubing extending below the rear of frame and at least ½" below the bottom of fuel cell to cover the width of the fuel cell.  Minimum ground-to-fuel cell 8".

Starter

1.                 Car must start under its own power.  After-market starters permitted.

Cooling System

1.       No Antifreeze.

Springs

1.       Coil over or bucket type springs permitted.  One spring per wheel.

Body

The car body must be acceptable to BIR Officials at all times.  All body parts must have a minimum clearance of 4" at all times with fuel, oil, and water, without driver.  No car will be allowed to start a race without a full body.  Use of headlight and taillight decals recommended.

 ABC Bodies:  For rules regarding ABC Bodies please refer to the ABC Rule book available from BIR, Five Star or ARP

2.                 After-market fiberglass or aluminum bodies permitted only, no carbon fiber.  Body must remain standard in appearance and fit either a stock Five Star template for makes and model of Five Star bodies or a stock ARP template for make and model of ARP bodies.  No streamlining, under panning, humps in fenders or hoods or rolled-over front fenders.  A 1" tolerance will be allowed to template.

3.                 Stock as manufactured two piece poly plastic front nose and tail covers only, no altering.  Grill air intake must be fully covered with screen in stock in location, height and width.  Maximum front overhang is 47" measured from center of spindle to forward most point on front nose cover.  Maximum rear cover overhand is 54", measured from center of rear axel to farthest edge of rear cover.

4.                 Minimum rear quarter panel height 34 ½", maximum rear quarter panel height 35 ½".  Rear quarter panel height is measured at the meeting point of the quarter panel and rear bumper cover at the deck lid seam.

5.                 Minimum roof height is 48" for all cars except the 2000 and newer Monte Carlo, Taurus or Intrepid; minimum roof height is 47".  Roof height is measured in the center, 10" from behind the top of the windshield.  No rails on roof or rear window.

6.                 Maximum width of spoiler 61", measured across the backside of the spoiler, maximum height of spoiler is 6 and ½".  Spoilers must be sold ?" sheet metal or ¼" clear polycarbonate.  No forward rudders or mounting brackets will be permitted.  Maximum 4 mounting brackets or supports on the backside of the spoiler.

7.                 Full windshield, rear window and rear quarter windows mandatory.  Vent windows optional, maximum length 12".  Windshield and all windows must be clear polycarbonate, minimum ?" thick.

8.                 Windshield and rear window must have a minimum of two, top to bottom, 1" x 1/8" support braces located in the center of the windshield and rear window behind the clear polycarbonate to brace as to not deform under race conditions.  Supports braces will be no closer than 3" apart.

9.                 Car body must be mounted in center of frame with wheels in the center of wheel wells.

Interior

1.                 Car interior must be complete and shield driver from ground, engine compartment and fuel cell area.  Firewall must be no less than 24-gauge metal and fully seal driver from engine compartment.

2.                 Car may have an installed dash panel with optional gauges.  No digital gauges permitted.  No in-car timing devices during competition.

3.                 ON-OFF switch must be located on dash within easy access of driver as well as access from outside left window opening.  ON-OFF positions must be clearly marked.

4.                 Quick release steering wheel is mandatory.  Center top section steering post must be padded with at least 2" of padding material.

5.                 All roll bars surrounding driver must be padded.  Padding must be acceptable to BIR Officials.

6.                 A window net must be installed in the left side door glass opening.  The window net must be a rib type, made from nylon material with a minimum 1" square opening between the ribs.  The minimum window net size shall be 22" wide by 16" high.  All window nets must have quick release mechanism and be welded to roll cage.  The window net, when in the closed position, must fit right when secured.

7.                 Rear view mirror permitted inside of car only.  

Frames

1.                 Straight rail, perimeter and OEM front clip frames permitted.

2.                 No chassis adjustment from inside car except for brakes.

3.                 Frame and roll cage, including weight box, must be inside of left front and left rear tires.

4.                 Minimum ground clearance at all times with fuel, oil, and water, without driver, is 4".

Wheel Base

1.       Wheel base must be in stock position, and within 1" from side to side.

2.                 Wheel base minimum 101".  

Roll Cage

1.                 BIR Officials must approve roll cage designs.  Round steel tubing 1 ¾" OD round tubing by .090" minimum wall thickness must be used to construct roll cage.  Roll cage should be box type with a cross support in the back and a minimum 9" upright support at the left front support.

2.                 Left door must have four bars and must the 1/16" minimum steel plate on all door bars.

Drive Shaft

1.                 Steel or Aluminum drive shaft only Min. 3".   Drive shaft must be painted white or silver.

2.                  Minimum one 360 degree loops, 1" x 1/8" steel.

Sway Bars

1.       The main body of the front sway bar must be made of steel and may be splined for attaching to the main body.  Helm joints may be used for attaching the sway bar arms to the lower control arms. 

Super Series Rule Enforcement

1.                 The Chief Tech Inspector shall be authorized to make changes from any specification contained in these rules as a situation may dictate.  Furthermore, the Chief Tech Inspector may impose further restrictions in an attempt to maintain fairness.  Under no circumstances may the Tech Inspector alter any safety rule to less than stipulated.

2.                 ANY VARIANCE OF THESE RULES BY PARTICIPANT THAT MAY ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A REDUCTION IN SAFETY, OR AN INCREASED RISK, TO ANY PARTICIPANT, SHALL BE EXCLUSIVE RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY OF PARTY OR PARTIES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VARIANCE.  THE MANAGEMENT OF BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY AND THE PROMOTORS SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR RULES AS PROVIDED.

3.                 OFFICIALS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CONFISCATE THE PARTS.

Protests

1.       A.          Only drivers may protest.  Protesting drivers and protested cars must have

                    finished in the top five and be on the lead lap.  All protests must receive an

                    approval of the pit officials.  Spite protests and unsportsmanlike protests

                    will not be accepted.

B.               All protests must be submitted to pit officials in writing within 10 minutes

        of feature race completion, and be accompanied by $250.00 CASH.  The

     driver who wins the protest will receive $225.00.

C.               Driver can only protest three times in one season and must wait three weeks

before protesting again.

D.               Drivers or cars found illegal forfeit all points and monies earned for the

entire race meet.

E.               Refusal to comply with a protest or to tear down when instructed by BIR

Officials will result in a fine equal to protest amount, an automatic two-event

point loss of points and monies earned for the evening.  Upon returning must agree to tear down after racing events for free.
